You've been dealing with the tension that builds up from a life lived in fast-forward. Somewhere along the way, someone suggested massage therapy.
Then the questions start creeping in...
"Is it going to hurt"?
"Do I have to get completely undressed?"
"What if I feel awkward, or worse... judged?"
Totally normal thoughts, especially if this is your first time seeing a massage therapist
(or your first time seeing one who actually specializes in your pain or possibly complex
condition).
So let’s walk through it together… the real, human experience of massage therapy and
what you can expect when you walk through the doors at Life Massage & Wellness.
First things first: You're in charge. Always.
Let’s get this out of the way:
You don’t have to do anything that makes you uncomfortable.
A great massage therapist doesn’t just work on your body, they work with it. That means
listening to your story, respecting your boundaries, and adjusting everything from
pressure to positioning based on your needs.
At Life Massage, the first few minutes of your session are all about connection and
collaboration. We’ll chat briefly about:
● Why you came in
● Any diagnoses or injuries we should know about
● Your goals for the session
● What you’re comfortable with (and what you’re not)
No rush. No assumptions. Just honest conversation so you feel safe, seen, and
supported.
What about getting undressed? Let’s talk about that.
This is one of the most common first-timer questions:
“Do I have to take off all my clothes?”
The answer: Only to your comfort level.
Massage therapy doesn’t require full nudity, not even close. In fact, you’ll be draped
with a sheet or blanket the entire time, and only the area being worked on will be
uncovered (like a leg, arm, or back). This is called professional draping, and it’s there to
protect your modesty and help you relax.
You can also choose to leave your underwear on, keep a layer of clothing on, if that
feels safer, or even opt for clothed techniques like Thai or chair massage. This is your
session.
What does a massage for pain relief actually feel like?
Let’s clear up a myth here: Massage therapy does not have to be painful to be effective.
In fact, for clients dealing with chronic pain, neuralgia, or post-surgical healing, less
pressure is often more powerful. The right kind of touch can help:
● Calm your nervous system
● Reduce inflammation
● Improve circulation and lymphatic flow
● Gently unwind muscle tension without triggering more pain
At Life Massage, sessions are intuitive and responsive. That means we don’t “dig in”
unless your body welcomes it, and we always check in with you throughout the session
to adjust.
Many clients describe the experience as:
“Like my body finally exhaled.”
“The first time in weeks I wasn’t thinking about pain.”
“Safe, grounded, and finally out of survival mode.”
What Happens During a Typical Session?
Here’s how a typical appointment flows:
1. Intake & Chat (5–10 minutes): We go over your goals, any updates on your condition,
and set intentions for the session.
2. You get on the table (and under the covers): We leave the room to give you privacy.
You undress to your comfort level and lie down on the massage table, under soft linens.
We’ll knock before re-entering.
3. The massage begins: Depending on your needs, we might focus on:
● Reducing neck and shoulder tension
● Easing low back tightness post-surgery
● Working with scar tissue
● Gently relaxing overactive pain signals
We use different techniques depending on your body’s needs… everything from
Swedish to myofascial, neuromuscular, or lymphatic work.
4. Stillness & rest: There’s often a quiet moment near the end of your session, just
stillness and breath. Many clients feel a deep nervous system reset here.
5. Post-session check-in: You’ll have time to dress and we’ll talk about what came up,
how you’re feeling, and any home care or follow-up suggestions.
What If I’m Anxious or Self-Conscious?
Let’s say it loud: You are not a burden.
It’s okay to feel nervous. It’s okay to carry trauma or pain. It’s okay to have a body that
doesn’t look or move the way you wish it did.
At Life Massage, we specialize in working with real humans, not Instagram bodies or
“ideal” clients. We work with folks in recovery, with disabilities, in hospice care, and
navigating chronic conditions. You will be met with empathy, professionalism, and zero
judgment.
